Get on with it!

Came across an excellent article this morning, just published by Matt Mullenweg who has led the emergence of Wordpress as one of the premier website publishing tools.

The heart of Matt's article is to get your product, service, or idea out into the real world because then:

...you have the unique competitive advantage of hearing from real people what they think of your work, which in best case helps you anticipate market direction, and in worst case gives you a few people rooting for you that you can email when your team pivots to a new idea. Nothing can recreate the crucible of real usage

This website has been live for about 6 weeks now. It was hard to make the decision to start publishing. If I'd waited longer, the structure of what I wanted to say would have been clearer, the words more carefully chosen and effective, the design more attractive, and so on.

But the conclusion was to get on with it. I knew that it wouldn't be perfect, but I had:

  • 25 years experience working with clients in these aspects of business
  • sufficient understanding of available technology to make informed choices about what technology to use and to be able to get the site working myself
  • the need to direct clients, prospects and friends to a place where my approach to "real world strategy" was explained and supported

My plan was to get on with it and to make it better with the benefit of experience.

Of course, at this early stage, I've got the luxury that hardly anybody is reading what's being published!

But that will change. More people will come across the ideas here. And I'll achieve my goal of having a place where I can engage in some great conversations about real world strategy.

It's good to do all of the careful thinking and design and preparation so that things are as good as they can be from the start.

But waiting for perfect doesn't get results in the real world.
